I'm thinking about moving to a new domain, using WordPress, so I'm interested in the answers as well.
Nothing's ever as good as it looks, Wordpress included. But it is pretty good.
Depends on what you want, of course. It's pretty ok out of the box, but if you want to do a lot of configuring, you can get bogged down very deep in configurations, plugins, programming and such.
I find Wordpress much more logical and workable than for example Movable Type, and if you don't expect huge loads of traffic (where MT shines), WP is a good choice.
The installation offered by wordpress.com is quite limited, and you don't have a choice in what plugins are installed (and if you don't want to pay, there aren't many available themes either). I'm still happy with it for example for the Åcon site -- it's free and the limited options mean limited time spent twiddling with the site instead of doing more productive things. :-)
If you have a possibility of having your own installation, it's of course much more flexible but also means more work. I'd suggest setting one up on wordpress.com and seeing if it meets your requirements. If not, you can always use your own setup instead.

I'm thinking of moving this here blog to wordpress.com. Is that a good or a bad idea? Am not too bothered about changing the URL (and obviously there will be links and redirects and things), but is Wordpress as good as it looks? Comments welcome.
